Scott Spino Foundation Hosting Bunco Bash for Books
Scott Spino was killed by a drunk driver 12 years ago but his dream of helping kids lives on through the Scott Spino Foundation. The Foundation is hosting Bunco Bash for Books to raise money to buy new books for children.
Scott’s mom Geri Spino, gave the details about Bunco Bash for Books which is Thursday, November 3, at 6 p.m. at Ridgemont Country Club, 3717 Ridge Rd. W., in Greece.
Hundreds Gather to Raise Money for the Scott Spino Foundation
On Monday night, hundreds of people gathered to raise money for the Scott Spino Foundation. Spino was an award-winning teacher in the Rochester City School District who was killed by a drunk driver in 2004. This evening at Lakeshore Country Club, friends, family and former co-workers gathered to raise money for student scholarships, a coat give-away, and a literacy program in local schools. “It’s really an honor to be a part of this tradition, to continue,” said Jason Havens, a friend of Spino. “What they do for this community here with this organization here is tremendous.”
Paychex donates backpacks to Scott Spino Literacy Program
Paychex is the latest local company doing something good in Scott Spino’s name. Spino was an award-winning teacher at School 22 in Rochester. He was killed by a drunk driver in 2004. His parents started the Scott Spino Literacy Program, which still operates out of School 22. Hundreds of volunteers read to students there every month.
Today Paychex donated 60 backpacks filled with school supplies to students at School 22. The backpacks were filled by children of Paychex employees. An act of kindness and community, just in time for school – which starts this Wednesday.
Scott Spino Foundation wins Education Award
Geri and Jerry Spino of the Scott Spino Foundation were selected for the 2015 Friend of Education award by the School Administrators Association of New York State, the association announced this week.
The Spinos founded the Scott Spino Foundation in memory of their son Scott Spino — a Rochester City School District teacher who was killed at 28 by a drunk driver in 2004.
Since Scott Spino’s death, the Scott Spino Foundation awarded 29 scholarships, donated ten of thousands of winter clothing items and books to students in need, and invested about $340,000 into the Rochester area through the Scott Spino Literacy and Warm programs. The Literacy program is currently active in 22 Rochester area schools. The Spinos will be honored for their contributions at an awards ceremony on May 8 in Albany.
Scott Spino Foundation Wins Award
Scott Spino was an award-winning teacher in the Rochester City School District. Today, the foundation that bears his name is also winning awards. In 2004, Spino was killed by a drunk driver. Spino was 28 years old at the time, and a popular teacher and coach at School 22. After his death, his parents started the Scott Spino Foundation to support public education in Rochester.
Now, the School Administrators Association of New York State says it will honor the foundation with its annual, Friend of Education Award. Since 2004, the Scott Spino Foundation has awarded 29 scholarships and given away more than 30,000 books to Rochester students. It also conducts a literacy program in 22 local schools. The Spino’s will be honored in a ceremony in Albany next month.
